Program Overview

This program is ideal for:

Medical students (3rd year and above), nursing students, qualified healthcare professionals, paramedics, EMTs, CNAs, and aspiring medical practitioners seeking hands-on clinical experience in a developing healthcare setting. Pre-med students with relevant coursework are also welcome.

About the Medical Volunteer Project

Join Nadumu's Medical Volunteer Program and gain invaluable clinical experience while making a tangible difference in healthcare access for underserved communities in Arusha. Unlike typical shadowing programs, our locally-owned organization places you in government hospitals, private clinics, and community health centers where medical care is desperately needed and your contribution is genuinely valued.

Tanzania faces significant healthcare challenges including limited medical personnel, inadequate resources, and barriers to accessing quality care. In many rural and low-income urban areas around Arusha, patients travel hours for basic medical services, and facilities are chronically understaffed. Your presence brings additional support to overworked local healthcare professionals and helps expand capacity to serve more patients.

What to Expect and How You'll Make an Impact

As a medical volunteer with Nadumu, you'll work alongside Tanzanian doctors, nurses, clinical officers, and allied health professionals in real healthcare settings. Your role and responsibilities will be tailored to your experience level, qualifications, and the immediate needs of your placement facility.

  • Observe and assist in clinical practice - Shadow local medical professionals in outpatient departments, inpatient wards, emergency rooms, and specialized clinics
  • Participate in patient care - Take vital signs, conduct patient histories, assist with wound care, and support routine medical procedures under supervision
  • Support health education - Educate patients and communities on preventive care, hygiene, nutrition, HIV/AIDS awareness, maternal health, and chronic disease management
  • Join medical outreach campaigns - Participate in mobile health clinics serving remote villages with limited access to healthcare services
  • Learn tropical medicine - Gain exposure to diseases rarely seen in developed countries including malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and parasitic infections
  • Experience resource-limited medicine - Develop clinical skills and creative problem-solving in settings with limited technology and supplies

Clinical Placement Options

Medical volunteers are placed in healthcare facilities throughout Arusha based on their qualifications, experience, interests, and current facility needs. You may rotate through multiple departments or focus on specific areas of interest.

Outpatient Department (OPD)

Work in general outpatient clinics seeing patients with acute and chronic conditions. Learn diagnostic skills and patient management in a fast-paced environment.

Maternal & Child Health

Assist in antenatal care, labor and delivery, postnatal care, and pediatric clinics. Support midwives and maternal health education programs.

Laboratory & Diagnostics

Observe laboratory procedures including blood tests, malaria testing, HIV screening, and microscopy. Learn diagnostic techniques used in resource-limited settings.

Inpatient Wards

Assist with ward rounds, patient monitoring, medication administration, and daily patient care in medical, surgical, pediatric, and maternity wards.

Dental Services

Work with local dentists providing basic dental care, extractions, and oral health education to underserved populations.

HIV/AIDS & TB Clinics

Support specialized clinics treating patients with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and related opportunistic infections. Learn about antiretroviral therapy and TB management.

Emergency & Trauma

Observe emergency medicine in action, including trauma care, acute illness management, and triage in resource-constrained emergency departments.

Specialized Clinics

Rotate through ophthalmology, diabetes clinics, hypertension management, mental health services, and other specialized departments based on availability.

Community Medical Outreach

Participate in mobile health clinics visiting remote Maasai villages and underserved communities twice weekly. These outreach campaigns provide free medical consultations, basic treatments, health screenings, and health education to populations with minimal access to healthcare. You'll work alongside local medical staff, translators, and community health workers, gaining unique insight into rural healthcare delivery in Tanzania.

SDG 3

Contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goal #3: Good Health and Well-Being

Universal health coverage is essential for sustainable development. By volunteering in Tanzania's healthcare system, you're helping expand access to quality medical services for vulnerable populations while developing skills that will make you a more compassionate and globally-minded healthcare professional.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Education: Must be in 3rd year or later of medical, nursing, or dental school, OR be a qualified healthcare professional (doctor, nurse, paramedic, EMT, CNA, midwife, dentist). Pre-med students with substantial pre-clinical coursework may be considered.
  • Minimum age: 18 years (strictly enforced due to clinical environment)
  • Language: Fluent English required. Basic Swahili is helpful and will be taught during orientation
  • Background check: Criminal background check required for all medical volunteers (Character references accepted for students)
  • Health: Good physical and mental health. Must be comfortable in clinical settings with limited resources. Current vaccinations required (see health section)
  • Insurance: Comprehensive travel and medical/liability insurance mandatory for all medical volunteers
  • Professional behavior: Must demonstrate maturity, cultural sensitivity, confidentiality, and professional ethics in clinical settings
  • Commitment: Minimum 2 weeks strongly recommended (4+ weeks ideal for meaningful clinical exposure). 1 week accepted but provides limited learning opportunity
  • Documentation: Must provide proof of student status (official enrollment letter) or professional qualifications (license/certification copy)

Important Medical Volunteer Guidelines

Due to Tanzanian medical regulations and language barriers, volunteers primarily observe and assist under direct supervision. Independent clinical practice is not permitted. The level of hands-on involvement depends on your qualifications, the supervising practitioner's comfort level, and facility policies. Volunteers with advanced training and experience typically have more opportunities for active participation.

  • All meals prepared by your host family
  • Genuine family atmosphere and Swahili language practice
  • Deep cultural exchange and local insights

Important: Living Conditions Reality Check

Accommodation in Arusha is basic and reflects authentic Tanzanian living standards. Expect frequent power outages (sometimes lasting hours), occasional water shortages, cold showers when electricity is out, limited hot water, slow/unreliable internet, basic furnishings, and tropical insects. This is part of the genuine experience of living and working in a developing country. Come with flexibility, patience, and a positive attitude. These conditions help you better understand the daily realities faced by the communities you're serving.

Meals

Three hearty daily meals included (dietary needs accommodated with advance notice):

Breakfast: Chai (sweet spiced tea), mandazi (fried dough), bread with jam/peanut butter, eggs, fresh tropical fruit, sometimes porridge

Lunch: Traditional Tanzanian meal - ugali (maize porridge), rice, chapati, beans, cooked vegetables, occasional chicken or beef stew

Dinner: Similar to lunch - variety of starches (rice, ugali, pasta), legumes, vegetables, and protein. Fresh fruit for dessert

Food is filling, nutritious, and prepared hygienically. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and halal options available with advance notice. Note that vegan and special diet options may be limited in variety.

Water: Filtered water provided at accommodations. Budget $3-5 per week for supplemental bottled water if desired.

Internet & Communication

WiFi at volunteer accommodations is limited and unreliable. Highly recommend purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival in Arusha for mobile data - approximately $10-15 for monthly data package. Our team will assist you in purchasing SIM cards during orientation. This is the most reliable way to stay connected with family and access medical resources online.

Health & Safety

All medical volunteers must have comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation coverage. We provide 24/7 emergency support, safety briefings, and access to reputable medical facilities if needed. Arusha is generally safe, but standard precautions for urban areas apply.
