Program Overview

This program is ideal for:

Volunteers passionate about education who want to make a meaningful impact in Maasai communities. No formal teaching qualifications required - just enthusiasm, patience, and a willingness to learn. TEFL certification is helpful but not mandatory.

About the Teaching Project

Join Nadumu's Teaching Volunteer Program and help bridge the educational gap in rural Maasai communities around Monduli. Our partner schools serve children who face significant challenges including large class sizes (often 40-60 students), limited resources, and teachers who are often overburdened. Your presence brings invaluable support, fresh perspectives, and individual attention that these students rarely receive.

What to Expect and How You'll Make an Impact

Education is highly valued in Maasai communities, but many families struggle with poverty, cultural barriers, and lack of resources. Girls especially face pressure to leave school early for marriage or domestic work. As a volunteer teacher, you'll:

  • Inspire and motivate students to value education and pursue their dreams
  • Provide individual attention in overcrowded classrooms
  • Introduce creative teaching methods through games, songs, arts, and interactive activities
  • Support local teachers by assisting with lesson planning and classroom management
  • Encourage girls' education and empower female students to stay in school
  • Bridge cultural gaps by sharing your own background while learning about Maasai culture

Teaching Responsibilities

You'll work in primary or secondary schools in rural areas around Monduli, supporting both English-medium and Swahili-medium schools. Typical responsibilities include:

English Language

Teaching conversational English, grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing skills through interactive activities and games

Mathematics

Assisting with basic arithmetic, problem-solving, and helping students who need extra support

Geography & Science

Supporting lessons about the world, environment, basic sciences, and health education

Creative Arts

Leading art, music, drama, and physical education activities that foster creativity and confidence

Library & Reading

Organizing reading sessions, managing small libraries, and promoting literacy through storytelling

Computer Skills

Introducing basic computer literacy where facilities are available

School Holidays & Exam Periods

Tanzanian schools have break periods in early April (10 days), June-early July (4 weeks), early September (2 weeks), and December-early January (4 weeks). During these times, volunteers may be placed in daycares, kindergartens, or special tutoring programs that remain open. Flexibility is essential as placements may adjust based on school schedules.

SDG 4

Contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goal #4: Quality Education

Education is the foundation for breaking the cycle of poverty. By supporting quality education in underserved Maasai communities, you're helping create opportunities for children to build better futures for themselves and their families.

What Volunteers Say

"Teaching with Nadumu in Monduli was the most rewarding experience of my life. The children were so eager to learn despite having so little. Living with a Maasai family showed me what true community and generosity mean. The Nadumu team supported me every step of the way and made sure I felt safe and welcomed."

- Emma T., Australia | 4 weeks, Teaching Program

"What sets Nadumu apart is the authenticity. You're not just observing Maasai culture - you're living it. The women who run this organization genuinely care about their community and about the volunteers. I taught English to eager students and learned more about resilience, joy, and simplicity than any classroom could teach me."

- Michael R., Canada | 6 weeks, Teaching Program

"I was nervous about volunteering abroad for the first time, but Nadumu made everything easy. The orientation was thorough, my homestay family was incredibly welcoming, and the school staff appreciated every bit of help. Seeing the students' faces light up when they understood a new concept made every moment worthwhile."

- Sofia M., Spain | 3 weeks, Teaching Program
